The foundation was formed to:
- Foster the development of climbers, particularly young climbers;
- Support the involvement of disadvantaged young people in the sport of climbing;
- Promote an appreciation of climbing ethics;
- Advocate for and support the development climbing excellence of infrastructure in Australia;
- Support communicating the history of Australian climbing to the public.
Rick had a number of clear values regarding Australian climbing which underpin the Association:
- A commitment to support and mentor climbers in achieving extraordinary things, and further develop their love of climbing;
- That indoor, competition, traditional, expeditionary and sport climbing all had a valid place in a tapestry of climbing styles and modes. Beyond this however, there was a need for a deep appreciation for the appropriatness
of particular forms of climbing in particular contexts, and a deep appreciation for both excellence and climbing ethics;
- The need to appreciate the importance of mental strength, as well as various physical strengths in how young climbers were trained;
- That climbing had become a science, with particular specific training approaches required if climbers from Australia were to be internationally competitive;
- That many older, seasoned climbers have a great deal to offer in mentoring younger climbers;
- That the adventure industry should support the development of young climbers.
